Maggots

The universal bait. If you could only have one thing in the bag for a mixed UK stillwater or canal, maggots would still be the answer.

What it is

Maggots catch roach, F1s, carp, tench, bream, perch and the rest. They work on the waggler, the feeder, the pole and the whip. They also attract every small fish in the county, which is both the point and the problem.

Bronze, red and fluoro all have their days. A pinch of fluoro maggot on the hook can pick out a better fish over a bronze feed. In winter they are often the only bait a commercial F1 wants. Keep them cool, keep them dry-ish, and don't let them pupate into casters unless you mean them to.

When to use it

Almost any mixed session. Winter commercials. Canals. Rivers after 16 June. Anytime you're not sure.

Seasonal strengths

Year-round. Strongest in the cold, when pellets and corn slow down. High summer they still catch, but small fish can smear you.

How to present it

Single or double on a small hook for silvers. A bunch for carp, tench and barbel. In a maggot feeder. Hooked on a pole rig. Buried in a method mix as a surprise bait.

Hooking / hair-rigging / prep

Keep them in the fridge or a cool bag. Drain off sweat. A bit of maize flour if they're too wet. Don't freeze a pint you need tomorrow.

Feeding

How much to feed

A pint will do a canal or a winter commercial. Two or three pints if you're maggot-feeder fishing a river crease all day.

How often to feed

Every minute on a whip or waggler line. Every recast on a maggot feeder. Not a handful every half hour.

What to feed with it

Hemp to hold better fish. Groundbait in a cage. Pinkies in the cold. A few casters if you have them.

Best combinations

Maggot and hemp. Maggot over groundbait. Worm tip on a maggot hook for perch. Fluoro hookbait over bronze feed.

Feeding notes

Little and often. A dozen every minute on a canal roach line; a pot of them for tench; a steady stream for F1s in the cold.

Common mistakes

Warm, wet maggots that sweat and die. Too big a hook. Feeding a pint an hour into 2oz fish. Ignoring them in summer because pellets are fashionable.

When to change bait

When small fish make a proper bait impossible — switch to corn, punch, pellet or hemp. When they won't have maggot at all (some pellet-only days) — believe the fish.

Beginner tip

Two bronze maggots on a size 16, fed little and often, will catch on more UK waters than any other single setup.

Advanced tip

Dead maggots on the hook when live ones are stripped. A fluoro in a bunch of bronze. Hookbait change before peg change.
