Lift method

A float dotted right down with a tell-tale shot near the hook. When a tench (or a crucian) lifts that shot, the float comes up. That is the bite.

What it is

The lift is older than most of the people fishing it. You fish a bait on the silt, slightly overdepth, with a small shot a few inches from the hook. When a tench picks the bait up, the shot comes up, and the float rises or lays flat.

Strike that. It is not a dip. It is the opposite, and it still catches more tench than a quiver tip on the right peg.

When to use it

Tench at dawn along the pads. Crucians. Anytime you are on the silt with a float and they are mouthing, not ripping it away.

When not to

F1s on a pellet waggler. A river. Fish that smash it before you can blink — you will miss, use a more positive float.

The kit

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.

Rod
12–13ft float rod.
Reel
3000, light and smooth.
Main line
3–5lb.
Hooklength
12–18 inches of 0.10–0.14mm.
Hook
16–20 to maggot or punch; 14–16 to corn.
Float / feeder
A waggler or river float to match the job.
Accessories
Plummet, shot, float stops or rubbers, a bait pouch.

12–13ft float rod, 3000 reel, 3–5lb line, a float you can actually see, fine hooklength.

On the peg

Feeding strategy

A small plate of corn, maggot or worm. Not a match carpet.

How to set it up

Light waggler or a quill, dotted down, tell-tale near the hook, bait on the silt.

Where to cast

Along the pads, a silt bay, a quiet estate-lake margin.

Depth / presentation

Slightly overdepth, bait on the deck, tell-tale off the bottom until they lift it.

The first hour

Be there at first light. A small baited spot. Watch the float come up.

Conditions

Calm enough to see a lift. Dawn and dusk. A ripple is still readable if the insert is right.

How to fish it

Plumb so the bait sits. Dot the float so you can see a rise. Wait. When the bristle comes up or the float lays flat, strike. Then keep them out of the pads.

Starting routine

First hour plan

  1. 0–10 min

Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.

  2. 10–30 min

A small plate of corn, maggot or worm. Not a match carpet.

  3. 30–60 min

If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.

Bite indication

The float rises or lays flat. A dither then a rise. Not always a dip.

Striking

When it comes up and stays up, or lays flat. A clean lift.

Playing and landing

Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.

Common mistakes

Striking at dips and missing the lift. Tell-tale so heavy they feel it and drop it. Arriving at ten.

Troubleshooting

No lift, only dips: tell-tale too heavy, or they are not tench. Nothing: you are not on them.

Beginner setup

A light insert, a no.8 or no.6 near the hook, three grains of corn, a lily line at dawn.

More advanced

Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.
