Venue type
Small, often weedy, often shy. Crucians, tench, rudd and the odd carp. Light tackle and a small baited spot.
A farm pond or a genuine estate lake is not a commercial with fewer pegs. Fish stocks can be low, the lilies can be real, and a method feeder crashed against the island can ruin the morning.
A waggler, a short pole, maggot, caster and corn, and sitting still, will outfish a barrow. Crucians, if they're true, want the quietest version of that.
Tench, crucians, rudd, roach, carp, perch, the odd eel.
Light waggler or pole to the pads. A tiny bed of bait. Surface bread if the carp want it and the rules allow.
These are often private or club waters. Leave them as you found them. Don't advertise the crucians.
Usually none by statute on stillwaters, but estate lakes and SSSIs can close. If there's a stream through it, check.

Lift method
A float dotted right down with a tell-tale shot near the hook. When a tench (or a crucian) lifts that shot, the float comes up. That is the bite.

A plumbed pole rig with the bait on the bottom. F1s, carp, silvers and canal fish that want it still, not falling.

A carbon pole to 11–16m with elastic, a light rig, and the bait put exactly where you fed. The most accurate tool on a commercial and a canal.

A peacock or plastic waggler with a fine insert in the tip, so a shy lift or dip actually shows. The stillwater and canal float for roach, F1s and tench.

Maggot on the pole
The universal pole bait. Single or double maggot, a pinch of feed, and a line you plumbed. Silvers, F1s in the cold, canals, and anyone who is not sure.

Fishing overdepth with the bait still on the bottom and the float slightly over-shotted or held. Tench, big roach, and a bait that does not move.
