Pike fishing

A deadbait or a lure, wire, forceps, a mat, and the honesty to leave them alone in a heatwave. Not a carp hair-rig. Not a maggot session extra.

What it is

Pike fishing is a different sport that happens to share the same waters. Wire trace, long forceps, cutters, a proper mat, and a plan for a toothed mouth. Deadbaits on a running leger or a float, lures where allowed. Never a treble in a fish you cannot unhook.

Many clubs close pike in the warmer months for welfare. Follow the card. Livebaiting is banned or restricted on many waters. Moving live fish between waters is illegal. Rivers wait until 16 June for coarse fishing.

If you do not have the unhooking kit, you do not have a pike session.

When to use it

Colder months, natural stillwaters, reservoirs, canals, open-season rivers. Where the club wants pike fished.

When not to

Heatwaves. Spawning fish in spring. A commercial F1 peg. Without wire, forceps and a mat. A river in the close season.

Feeding strategy

You are not feeding a bed. A deadbait sits. Lures are worked. Do not empty a bag of trout into a swim 'to draw them'.

How to set it up

Wire, running leger or a float, deadbait or a lure, forceps, cutters, mat, a big net.

Where to cast

Drop-offs, reed lines, bays, canal junctions, river slack edges after 16 June.

Depth / presentation

A deadbait on the deck or under a float, or a lure at the right speed. Wire always for pike.

The first hour

Kit out properly before you wet a line. Then a bait in a likely bay, or a lure along a feature. Do not start at noon in a heatwave.

Conditions

Cool water. Coloured water after rain on a river. Bright high-pressure days can still work with lures; deadbaits often want a bit of colour.

How to fish it

Wire on. Deadbait out, or a lure along the reeds. When you hook one, keep them out of the snags, net them, unhook on a wet mat with forceps, in the water if you can. Photograph in the net. Recover them before they kick off. If you cannot unhook a treble, you should not have cast it.

Starting routine

First hour plan

  1. 0–10 min

    Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.

  2. 10–30 min

    You are not feeding a bed. A deadbait sits. Lures are worked. Do not empty a bag of trout into a swim 'to draw them'.

  3. 30–60 min

    If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.

Bite indication

A run on a deadbait, a thump on a lure. Give a moment on a drop-back, then hit them or let the circle do it, according to the rig.

Striking

According to the rig — trebles often need a proper hit; some single-hook rigs do not. Know which you tied.

Playing and landing

Net, mat, forceps, wire cutters. No gill-grip for a photo. No heatwave air time. They are not carp.

Common mistakes

No wire. No forceps. A carp hair-rig. Heatwave pike. Live fish moved between waters. A river in May.

Troubleshooting

Dropped runs: wait a beat, or a different bait. Weed: a float-leger. No fish: wrong feature, or a warm afternoon they are not using. Bite-offs: you fished without wire. That is on you.

Beginner setup

A ready-made wire trace, a small deadbait on a running leger, forceps, cutters, a mat, a cool-weather day on a known pike water. Leave trebles until you can unhook them.
