A smaller deadbait, often at night or in coloured water, on drains, rivers and a few reservoirs where they are established. Wire is the honest default. They are not small pike.

Zander hunt in coloured, often deeper water, and they like a smaller deadbait than a pike. A running leger, a float-leger, a lure worked slowly. Wire is the honest default even if some anglers argue fluoro on pressured zander waters — a bite-off with a treble in a fish is a welfare failure.
They are established in some English rivers, drains and cuts. Open season on rivers. Fish care is pike-level: forceps, a mat, no heatwave. Do not move live fish between waters.

Kit out. A small bait in a coloured hole. Night often beats noon.
Colour, low light, a bit of flow on a drain. Bright gin-clear midday is harder.
Small deadbait, wire, patience, or a slow lure. They can pick it up and run. Unhook as carefully as a pike. They have teeth and a different mouth — do not assume a pike gag is the answer; forceps and a plan are.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
None. A deadbait or a lure.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
Often shyer than pike. A twitch, a slow run. Do not assume every knock is weed.
Know your rig. Too soon and you pull it out of a lightly holding fish.
Net, mat, forceps. They are not a nuisance pike. Return them; in many waters they are part of the fishery, in others they are a debate — the fish still needs unhooking.
A 12-inch deadbait. No wire. Treating them as pike with a worse attitude. A river in May.
Dropped baits: smaller, or a wait. No fish: wrong water, or midday bright. Bite-offs: wire.
Beginner setup
If you have not fished pike with wire and forceps, do that first. Then a small roach deadbait on a drain where zander actually live.
