Pits, meres, estate lakes and waters that were not built as day-ticket carp mills. Lilies, silt, snags, and fish that do not have to eat your bait.
Natural waters — or at least waters that behave like them — ask more of you. Features are real: wind-blown banks, lily beds, bars, inflows. Stock levels are lower. The tench might only feed at dawn. The carp might want a single bait at range.
This is where watercraft earns its name. Watch before you cast. Bait a small area. Don't expect commercial-style action. A blank on a mere is not a failed method; it is often just the mere.

Waggler or light feeder to the pads for tench. Method in moderation on waters that see it. Cage feeder for bream. Stalking in the edge. Silvers on maggot and caster away from the carp line.
Many are club or syndicate waters — fish the rules you signed. Give wildlife and other bank users room. Never give away a peg in public.
Most stillwaters have no statutory coarse close season, but SSSI stillwaters and some club waters do. Check the club book. Rivers feeding the lake are a different matter.

A deadbait or a lure, wire, forceps, a mat, and the honesty to leave them alone in a heatwave. Not a carp hair-rig. Not a maggot session extra.

Lift method
A float dotted right down with a tell-tale shot near the hook. When a tench (or a crucian) lifts that shot, the float comes up. That is the bite.
