The lead on a tail, the hooklength on a boom above it. A way to hang a bait off the bottom or keep it out of silkweed and rubbish.

A paternoster puts the lead at the bottom of a tail and the hooklength on a dropper above, so the bait can sit up or off the muck. It is useful on weed, on a river with rubbish on the deck, and for perch that want a worm off the bottom.
It is not a method feeder. Keep the boom short enough to cast, long enough to do the job.

Popped over weed
A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
A quiver or through-action rod, a straight lead, a hooklength, a bait.
On the peg
Catapult or a PVA bag. The lead is not a feeder.
Twizzled boom or a three-way, lead on the tail, hooklength on the boom. Adjust both lengths.
Weedy stillwaters, a river crease with rubbish, a perch feature.
Bait off the deck. A worm, a pop-up, a bunch of maggots.
Set the tail so the lead holds and the bait sits where you want it. Then wait.
Weed, rubbish, or fish off the bottom. Clear water where a bait in the silk disappears.
Cast, let the lead hold, tighten. The bait should be off the muck. A knock or a pull. If you come back with a bunch of weed on the hook, the tail is too short.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
Catapult or a PVA bag. The lead is not a feeder.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
A nod, a pull, a drop-back. Perch rattle.
A fuller sweep than a four-inch method — there is more slack in a boom.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
A two-foot boom that helicopters. Using it on a clean method peg 'because it is clever'.
Weed on the hook: longer tail. Tangles: boom too long, or you punched the cast. No indication: too much slack.

A 6-inch tail to a bomb, a 12-inch hooklength on a boom, worm, a weedy perch peg.
