Boilies

Cooked, round hookbaits. A pit and specimen tool more than a 6-hour day-ticket method — but small boilies have a place.

What it is

Boilies are a carp bait: shelf-life or freezer, 10–18mm on most UK pits, sometimes smaller on commercials that allow them. They are a single-bait, long-stay approach more than a catapult rhythm.

On a day-ticket F1 lake a 18mm boilie is often the wrong conversation. On a pit, a balanced 12mm with a bag of pellets or a stringer is still how a lot of carp get caught. Check bait bans.

When to use it

Specimen carp pits. Some commercials that allow them. A single bait at range. Not a first-ever silver-fish session.

Seasonal strengths

Year-round on carp waters. Smaller in the cold. Food baits in autumn.

How to present it

Hair-rigged, bottom bait or slightly popped. With a PVA bag or a stringer. Not usually in a maggot feeder.

Hooking / hair-rigging / prep

Out of the bag. Soak or glaze if that's your thing. Don't freeze and refreeze into hockey pucks if you can help it.

Feeding

How much to feed

A kilo is a lot for a short session. A handful and some bags is more honest.

How often to feed

You're not recasting every two minutes with 18mm boilies. Put it on the spot and let it be.

What to feed with it

Pellets, particles if allowed, a matching crumb.

Best combinations

Boilie and a small bag of pellets. A 10mm on a method if the water allows. A pop-up over a bed of mixed offerings.

Feeding notes

A few free offerings, a bag, or a light scatter. Not a bucket on a pressured day-ticket.

Common mistakes

18mm on an F1 lake. A bucket in a swim you have for six hours. Ignoring a boilie ban.

When to change bait

If they're on particles or pellet, match that. A boilie is a choice, not a personality.

Beginner tip

On a commercial, start with pellets and corn. On a pit, ask the regulars what size they actually catch on.

Advanced tip

Balanced baits and small bags catch more day-session carp than a string of 18s at 120 yards for most people.
