Dendrobaenas, lobs and redworms. Perch, bream, tench and a bonus eel. The bait that still works when fashion has moved on.
A worm is the oldest honest bait in the bag. Chopped, whole, or a head on a hook, it catches perch by design and bream, tench, chub and carp by appetite. Dendrobaenas are the usual shop worm; lobs are the garden prize; redworms are a neat hookbait for shy fish.
Chopped worm in a feeder or a pot pulls fish. A whole worm on a light float is still how big perch get caught. Carry forceps.

A small cage or blockend on a canal, used sparingly for bream, tench and the odd carp. Not a 40g rocket into the far rushes.

A float dotted right down with a tell-tale shot near the hook. When a tench (or a crucian) lifts that shot, the float comes up. That is the bite.

Perch. Bream mix. Tench in silt. Coloured water. After rain on a river (open season). Anytime maggots are ignored.
Year-round. Autumn perch. Coloured water after rain. Summer tench will have a worm as readily as corn.
Whole on a float or leger for perch. Head only if they're tapping. Chopped in a cage feeder. A section on a pole for F1s and tench.
Keep them in proper worm bedding, cool, not drowning. Chop on a board at the peg, not in the kitchen if you can help it.
Feeding
A quarter-kilo of dendra is a lot of fishing. A few lobs for perch.
A pinch of chop with the feeder, or a pot every so often. Not a worm carpet.
Groundbait and maggot for bream. A few maggots for perch fry. Corn for tench.
Worm and maggot on the hook. Chopped worm in a cage. Worm over corn on a tench line.
A little chopped worm goes a long way. Too much and you feed the peg without a hookbait they can find.
Striking the first perch rattle. Leaving worms in a hot bag. A size 20 to a lob.
If eels become a problem at night, don't leave a worm out. If small perch shred it, try a head or a maggot.
Beginner tip
A dendrobaena on a size 14 under a float, next to a feature, is a complete perch session.
Advanced tip
Wrap a worm in a bit of groundbait for the throw. On bream, a worm-and-maggot cocktail out-sorts maggot-only more days than not.
