The last hour, the edge, and a big bait. Carp and F1s that have spent the day in open water often feed at your feet — if you haven't crashed about there since breakfast.

Margins are a time and a place, not a separate universe of tackle. Late in the day on a commercial, carp and F1s move into the edge to feed. Paste, meat, corn, worm and pellet all catch. A short pole or a waggler down the side puts a bait on the shelf.
The mistake is fishing the edge all day, feeding it into a cloudy mess, and then wondering why the fish don't come. Keep it quiet, feed it late, and use an elastic or a hooklength that can stop a fish that has two yards to a snag.
Last two hours on a commercial in the warm. After a match when fish have been fed all day. Anytime you see tails in the next peg's side.
First hour on a pressured lake (they're not there yet). A canal track (that's just fishing). A snag pit with no room to play a fish.

The language of UK commercials. Micros for the method, fishery pellets for the catapult. If the lake sells them, use them.
A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
Short pole with strong elastic, or a float rod down the side. 0.17–0.21mm, size 12–16, paste or meat or corn. A net in the water before you hook one.
On the peg
A pot of bait late, not a carpet at 9am. Little piles against the wall, the reeds, or the keepnet of the empty peg next door (if that's allowed — don't fish someone else's water).
Plumb the shelf. Fish on the bottom in a foot or two of water. Paste on the hook, or a cube of meat, or three bits of corn.
Your left edge, your right edge, the empty next peg if rules allow. Not under your box all day.
On the deck, tight to cover. Paste moulded round the hook. Meat on a hair or direct. Don't let it sit in a cloud of mud you just made.

Warm water, a bit of colour, and fish that have had a day of feed. Cold margins are usually empty.

Starting routine
0–10 min
Usually you do not start here. Fish open water first. If you must look in the edge, feed tiny and treat it as a look.
10–30 min
Through the middle of the day the edge is often empty on a pressured lake. Leave it alone.
30–60 min
Last 90 minutes: pot a little bait, ship out, sit still. If you see a dark shape, you are in the right place.
The float slides away. Sometimes it buries. Sometimes a tail takes the lot. Don't wait for a second invitation.
A firm lift. They're close — the strike is short.
Get their head up and the net under them before they reach the reeds. This is where people lose the fish of the day.
Baiting the edge at 8am. 4 elastic and a 12lb carp. Standing up and waving a landing net over them before they're hooked.
Muddy cloud and no bites: you fed too early or too much. Line bites: they're there — a bait on the bottom, not half way. Lost fish: too light, or the net wasn't ready.
Beginner setup
Top 3 of a pole, 12–14 elastic, a margin float, size 14 to two bits of corn or a bit of paste. Start the last 90 minutes, not at first light.
More advanced
Feed one edge, fish the other. A cube of meat when paste is getting robbed. Watch for the dark shape before you ship out.
