Not everyone owns a margin pole. A short chuck with a small method or pellet feeder into the edge, late in the day, catches the same carp and F1s — if you have left that edge alone since breakfast.
Quiet feet, a small frame, a strong hooklength. The net is already out.
Last two hours on a commercial. An edge you can reach with a short chuck. No pole in the bag.
First hour. A snag you cannot extract a fish from. A towpath canal (wrong tool).

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
10–12ft feeder, 4000 reel, 5–8lb, a feeder or lead that suits the swim.
On the peg
A few small frames late, not a carpet at 9am.
Small method or pellet feeder, 4–6 inch strong hooklength, corn, meat or a wafer.
Your edge, the empty next peg if rules allow. Tight to the wall or reeds.
On the deck in a foot or two. Bait in the mix.
Do not start here. Fish open water, come in later.
Warm, coloured, fish that have had a day of feed.
Leave the edge quiet. Late, a small frame, sit still, net ready. A smash under the rod tip. Keep their head up.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
A few small frames late, not a carpet at 9am.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
The tip wraps round. Do not wait.
A short lift. They are close.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
Baiting the edge at 8am. A 40g rocket into 2ft of water. No net ready.
Muddy soup: you fed too early. Lost fish: too light, or the net was not ready.

A 20g method, two bits of corn, the last 90 minutes, net assembled.
