A plumbed pole rig with the bait on the bottom. F1s, carp, silvers and canal fish that want it still, not falling.

On the deck is the default pole presentation once you have plumbed. Dead depth or a tiny bit over, a stable float, a bait that sits. Paste, expander, corn, maggot, worm.
It is not shallow, not a slap, not a mug. Learn this before those. Plumbing is the whole skill.
Most pole sessions. Cold water. Canals. F1s that will not come up. Paste and expander.

Day-ticket lakes built for sport: islands, pegs, F1s, carp, and a café. The easiest place to learn, and still a place you can fish very well.

A towpath, a far shelf, boats, and some of the most thoughtful fishing in the country. Bread punch, pole, and waggler still rule.

Small, often weedy, often shy. Crucians, tench, rudd and the odd carp. Light tackle and a small baited spot.

Expander pellets
Pumped, soft pellets that sink slowly. An F1 and skimmer hookbait, and a pole bait that matches a pellet feed.

Paste
Soft, moulded hookbait for the pole and the edge. Carp and F1s in the margins, and a bait that hides the hook.

Corn
Cheap, bright, and eaten by almost everything that swims in stillwater. One of the best 'I've only got this' baits in British coarse fishing.

Worms
Dendrobaenas, lobs and redworms. Perch, bream, tench and a bonus eel. The bait that still works when fashion has moved on.
A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
A pole you can hold, elastic to match, a dotted float, a short hooklength.
On the peg
A pot exactly over the float. Little and often. Micros, maggot, or a pinch of corn.
Plumb to the grain, mark the kit, bulk and droppers, bait on the bottom.
Top of the shelf, 11m open water, canal far-shelf, a short line.
Dead depth or an inch over. Still.
Plumb, feed a small line, catch what comes. Do not start at 16m.
Most. Wind is the enemy of long deck lines; fish better at 11m than badly at 16.
Plumb, mark, pot, lower the rig onto the spot. A dip or a sail. Lift the pole. If you foul-hook, they may be off the deck — come up a few inches before you dump the method.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
A pot exactly over the float. Little and often. Micros, maggot, or a pinch of corn.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
A dip, a hold, a sail. Elastic coming out.
A lift of the pole, not a carp-rod sweep.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
Not plumbing. Feeding at 11m, fishing at 13. A shallow float on the deck.
Nothing: not plumbed, or feeding a different distance. Foul-hooking: they are up. Tiny fish: bigger bait.
Beginner setup
11m, 8 elastic, a 4x14 float, size 18 maggot or an expander, plumbed 9–11m out.
More advanced
Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.
