A tiny feeder or a toss-pot used as a payload on a pole line, so the feed and the hookbait arrive together. F1s and carp on the deck, accurately.

A pole feeder is a small cage or a dedicated pole feeder hung on the rig, or more often a toss-pot that dumps a payload right by the float. The point is the same as a method: feed and bait in one place, at a distance you plumbed.
It is not a 40g rocket on elastic. Keep it small.

The universal bait. If you could only have one thing in the bag for a mixed UK stillwater or canal, maggots would still be the answer.
A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.

On the peg
The payload is the feed. Do not also throw a handful unless you mean a column.

Plumb, one small payload, see if they want it before you empty the tub.
Commercial deck lines. A bit of wind, when thrown pellets miss.
Fill the tiny feeder or pot, ship to the mark, dump or let it empty, watch the float. Recast the payload to refresh. If they come up, stop dumping and go shallow.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
The payload is the feed. Do not also throw a handful unless you mean a column.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
A dip or a wrap-round, same as a deck pole line.
Lift the pole. Elastic does the shock.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
A rod feeder on a pole. Dumping a pint. Not plumbing.
Dumping on their heads and nothing: too much, or they want a pinch. Elastic smashed: feeder too heavy.
Beginner setup
A toss-pot of micros, a plumbed expander or corn, 11m, 8–10 elastic.

Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.
