Pole fishing is about putting a bait on a sixpence. You ship out to a marked depth, feed with a pot or by hand, and the elastic plays the fish. It is how most UK commercials are won, and how a canal far-shelf is fished properly.
You do not need a 16m flagship on day one. An 11m pole, a few elastics, and a box of simple rigs will catch F1s, carp in the edge, silvers and canal roach. Plumbing is not optional.

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
11–16m pole, 4–12 elastic depending on fish, 0.12–0.17mm line, 4x12–4x18 pole float, size 16–20. Puller kit for carp.
On the peg
A pole pot puts a pinch exactly over the float. Hand-feeding works at 5–8m. Little and often. Dumping a pot of pellets then waiting twenty minutes is not pole fishing.
Plumb to the grain. Mark the depth on a top kit. Elastic to match the fish, not your optimism. Ship gently — slapping the rig on their heads is a skill for later.
Top of the shelf, bottom of the shelf, 11m into open water, far-bank on a canal, and the edge late. Pick one or two lines, not seven.
Dead depth, a few inches off, or shallow when they're up. Hold, inch, or let it settle. The float tells you.
Plumb, feed a small line, and catch what comes. If it's tiny fish, you have a silver line. If it's F1s, stay. Don't start at 16m because it looks professional.
A peg you can reach. Wind is the enemy of long poles; drop a section or two and fish better at 11m than badly at 16.

Pick one or two lines — top of the shelf, 11m into open water, far-bank on a canal — not seven. Feeding at 11m and fishing at 13m is how you blank with expensive carbon.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Plumb, mark the kit, feed a small line at a distance you can actually hold. Start at 9–11m, not 16m because it looks professional.
10–30 min
Catch what comes. If it is tiny fish, you have a silver line. If it is F1s, stay. Pot little and often — dumping a pot then waiting twenty minutes is not pole fishing.
30–60 min
Foul-hooking means you are through a shoal — shallow up or feed less. Nothing means not plumbed, or feeding a different spot to the float.
A dip, a hold, a sail. Elastic coming out is also a bite. Don't wait for the float to bury on every F1.
A lift of the pole, not a carp-rod sweep. The elastic should do the shock.
Ship back steadily, let the elastic work, net at the top kit. Puller kits exist because 13m of pole and a 10lb carp is a bad argument.
Too much pole in the wind. Not plumbing. Elastic that could stop a train, or elastic that a 2lb F1 bottoms out. Feeding at 11m and fishing at 13.
Foul-hooking: you're through a shoal — shallow up or feed less. Nothing: not plumbed, or feeding a different spot to the float. Broken elastic: too light, or a knot.
Beginner setup
11m pole, 6–8 elastic, a 4x14 float, size 18 to maggot, pot of maggots. Plumb 9–11m out on a commercial silver or F1 lake.
More advanced
Two depths on two kits. A short line for the edge. Slapping and mugging only when fish are already on the top — it's not a default.

Usually a hookbait that's too big, a strike that's too fast or too slow, or fish sitting above the bait.

You're fishing through a shoal. Come up, feed less tight, or move the bait away from the main pack.

You caught, then nothing. You may have fed them off, foul-hooked the shoal, or the light changed. Ease off, then change one thing.
