Punch, flake, crust. Canal winter roach, river chub, and a surface bait for carp. The cheapest serious bait in the bag.
Bread is several baits. Punch on a canal in winter still sorts roach when maggots feed a million gudgeon. Flake under a bush is a chub bait. Crust on the top is a carp bait. Liquidised bread is a feed.
Use fresh enough bread for flake, slightly stale for punch if you like a cleaner disc. A punch kit is cheap. A whole loaf on a carp lake is a surface session, not a method mix.

Canal punch
Winter canals. Chub in cover (open season). Surface carp. Anytime you need a bait small fish find harder to destroy than maggot.
Punch shines in the cold. Surface bread wants warmth. Flake for chub is an all-open-season trick.
A punch disc on a small hook for canals. A pinch of flake around the hook for chub. Crust or a mixer-sized pellet of mash for the top.
A cheap sliced white for punch. A slightly better loaf for flake. Mash with a bit of water for feed. Don't use mouldy bread.
Feeding
Half a loaf is a lot of punch discs. A loaf for a surface session if they're having it.
Little and often on a canal. A few frees then the hookbait on the top.
Squatts and pinkies on a canal. Mixers on the surface. Nothing, sometimes, for a single chub flake.
Punch over liquidised bread. Flake and maggot. Crust and mixers.
Liquidised bread or tiny pinches on a canal. A few pieces of flake into a chub hole. Mixers and bread on the top for carp.
A huge bit of flake on a canal punch peg. Surface fishing a banned water. Bread in a method frame as if it were micros.
If punch dies, try maggot or caster. If they boil on mixers, match mixers not crust. If chub spook, rest the hole.
Beginner tip
A punch set, a cheap white loaf, a canal in winter, size 18. That's a British lesson on its own.
Advanced tip
Change punch size before you change peg. A 4mm disc and a 7mm disc are different baits.
