The canal line under your feet: the near ledge, often ignored, where fish sit after boats, in the cold, or when the far shelf is a snag. Whip, short pole, punch or maggot.

People walk past the near shelf on the way to the far bank. After a boat, in winter, or on a bright day when the far side is impossible, the near ledge holds roach, gudgeon, perch and the odd bonus. A whip or the top kits, quietly, is enough.
Do not empty a pint on your feet and then wonder why they left. Do not block the towpath.
After boats, winter, a wind into the far bank, teaching a child, a cut with a real near ledge.
A shelf so shallow they cannot sit there. Standing up and waving a net over it all morning.

The universal bait. If you could only have one thing in the bag for a mixed UK stillwater or canal, maggots would still be the answer.

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
A pole you can hold, elastic to match, a dotted float, a short hooklength.
On the peg
A pinch. They are close — they can hear you, see you, and eat too much feed in a hurry.
Whip or top 3–5, light elastic, maggot, pinkie or punch.
The near ledge, a bit of cover, under the rod. Not in the cycle line.
Dead depth on the ledge, or on the drop down the inside slope.
Look at the near shelf before you ship 13m. If they are there, you will know quickly.
Colour, cold, boat traffic. Bright far banks that push fish in.
Sit still, feed a pinch, drop a maggot or punch on the ledge. Catch. If boats push a wave through, wait, then fish it again. If nothing, the track or the far shelf.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
A pinch. They are close — they can hear you, see you, and eat too much feed in a hurry.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
Fast, close. A dip. Perch if you drop a worm against brickwork.
A flick. They are at your feet — a heave launches them onto the path.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
Ignoring it. A pint of maggots on your toes. A 16m pole to fish 3m of water.
Nothing: they are not in. Tiny fish only: punch, or go across. Spooked: you are the problem — sit still.
