The canal far-bank line: a plumbed bait against the vegetation, often punch or maggot, where stamp roach and bonus fish sit. Boats move them; then they settle again.

The far shelf is a place, fished with a pole or a waggler. You plumb the lip of the far ledge, feed a small line against the grass, and stay there long enough for a shoal to trust it. Punch in winter, maggot and caster when there is colour.
Do not drag them through the far vegetation. Do not treat the rushes as a carp snag. Share the towpath.

Small maggots, usually pink. Winter F1s, canal silvers, and the hookbait when bronze maggots look too big.
A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
A pole you can hold, elastic to match, a dotted float, a short hooklength.
On the peg
A small cloud of punch or a dozen maggots, exactly on the lip. Little and often.
Plumb the far lip, mark the kit, fine bristle, punch or maggot.
The lip of the far shelf, not in the roots. Turning bays. Past a boat mooring they have sat against.
Dead depth on the lip. Fresh punch. On the drop if they come up in the cloud.
Plumb the lip properly. Feed a pinch. Stay. Ten yards along can be a different canal.
Colour from boats is a gift. Wind down the cut is kinder than wind into the far bank.
Plumb until you know the lip. Feed, drop in, wait. Boats: lift out, wait, then fish the colour. Stamp often sits tight to the grass — not a foot short, not in the roots.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
A small cloud of punch or a dozen maggots, exactly on the lip. Little and often.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
A slide, a lift. Boat-wash is not a bite.
A lift of the pole. Keep them out of the grass.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
Guessing the depth. Fishing a foot short all day. Dragging bonus carp through the bush.
Snags: you are in the roots — come a foot. Tiny fish: punch. Nothing: not on the lip, or ten yards along.

11–13m, 5 elastic, 5mm punch or maggot, the far lip of a coloured canal.

Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.

A dotted pole float, bulk and droppers, a short hooklength, elastic in the top kit. Accuracy is the whole point.

Waggler setup
Locked float, bulk around the base, droppers down the line, fine hooklength. The same skeleton covers traditional waggler and, with a dumpy body, pellet waggler.
