Small maggots, usually pink. Winter F1s, canal silvers, and the hookbait when bronze maggots look too big.
Pinkies are a smaller maggot, typically from a different fly, and they have a real job in UK fishing: cold-water F1s, shy canal roach, and any day the fish want a mouthful that isn't a full-size maggot.
They can be lively and they can ball up. A few on a fine hook, or mixed into a maggot feed, is usually enough. They are not a summer carp bait.

Whip fishing
A short, stiff pole fished to hand: no elastic, or very light elastic, and fish swung in. Speed fishing for silvers on canals and commercials.

The canal line under your feet: the near ledge, often ignored, where fish sit after boats, in the cold, or when the far shelf is a snag. Whip, short pole, punch or maggot.

Fishing the far shelf
The canal far-bank line: a plumbed bait against the vegetation, often punch or maggot, where stamp roach and bonus fish sit. Boats move them; then they settle again.

Pole fishing
Winter
Winter commercials. Hard canals. Tiny-fish days when you still want a bite. Mixed with maggots in a feeder.
Autumn through spring. They still work in summer on canals, but maggots and punch often do it better.
Single or double on a 18–20. A pinch in a maggot feeder. Pole and whip.
Keep them cool. They drown in their own sweat even faster than maggots.
Feeding
Half a pint is a lot of pinkies.
Little and often, same rhythm as maggots.
Bronze maggots, squatts on a canal, a bit of groundbait.
Pinkie hookbait over maggot feed. Pinkie and squatt on a canal punch peg.
A pinch, not a pint, unless you know the peg is solid silver fish.
Using them as the only feed on a carp lake in August. A size 12 hook.
When you want a better stamp — step up to maggot, caster or corn.
Beginner tip
If winter F1s are tapping and not taking, try a single pinkie before you try a different peg.
Advanced tip
Fluoro pinkies exist for a reason on pressured commercials.
