The universal pole bait. Single or double maggot, a pinch of feed, and a line you plumbed. Silvers, F1s in the cold, canals, and anyone who is not sure.

If you only learned one pole bait, maggot would still catch. It also attracts every small fish in the county, which is the point and the problem. Little and often, a fine hook, and a change to corn, punch or pellet when they smear you.
Winter commercials often want nothing else. Canals in colour want it. Tench will graze it.
Almost any mixed pole session. Winter F1s. Canals. When you are not sure.
A pellet-only rule. High summer tiny-fish soup when punch or corn will sort them. Warm, sweaty maggots.

Day-ticket lakes built for sport: islands, pegs, F1s, carp, and a café. The easiest place to learn, and still a place you can fish very well.

Small, often weedy, often shy. Crucians, tench, rudd and the odd carp. Light tackle and a small baited spot.
A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
A pole you can hold, elastic to match, a dotted float, a short hooklength.
On the peg
A dozen every minute on a silver line; a pot for F1s; not a handful every half hour.
Fine pole float, size 18–20, single or double maggot, plumbed or on the drop.
Track, far-shelf, a commercial silver or F1 line, a tench shelf.
On the drop for silvers; on the deck for F1s and tench. Fluoro hookbait over bronze feed if you have it.
Plumb, feed a little, maggot. If tiny fish arrive, that is information — change bait before peg.
Year-round. Strongest in the cold. Colour helps on a canal.
Pot or throw a few, lower a maggot in, catch. If they smear you, corn, punch, caster or pellet. If F1s want it in the cold, stay and keep a rhythm. Dead maggots when live ones are stripped.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
A dozen every minute on a silver line; a pot for F1s; not a handful every half hour.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
A dip, a dink, a sail. Strike silvers quickly; give F1s a beat.
A lift. Too hard on 0.10mm and you bounce them.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
Warm maggots. A size 12. Feeding a pint an hour into 2oz fish. Ignoring them in summer because pellets are fashionable.
Tiny fish: change bait, not always peg. Nothing: not plumbed, or they want pellet. Sweaty maggots: they are dying — cool them.
Beginner setup
11m, 6–8 elastic, size 18 to two bronze maggots, a pint, a commercial silver lake or a canal track.
More advanced
Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.
