The maggot feeder is a blockend — holes, not a cage — filled with maggots (and sometimes a pinch of hemp). It is how you put a trickle of live bait around a hookbait without a cloud of groundbait.
On commercials in the cold it is often better than the method. On rivers it is a crease tool for chub, barbel and roach after 16 June. Cap the end, don't overfill until they burst the lid in mid-air, and match hole size to how fast you want them out.
Cold commercials for F1s and carp. Rivers for maggot-feeding fish. Perch on a worm or maggot hookbait over a maggot trickle. When groundbait is putting them off.
High-summer carp on the surface. Clear, snaggy swims where a feeder snags every chuck. When the fishery bans maggots (some do in summer).

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
10–12ft feeder, 4–8lb mainline, 20–40g blockend, 30–60cm hooklength, size 14–18 to maggot. Stronger gear on a barbel crease.
On the peg
The feeder is the feed. Recast to refresh the trickle. On a river, every run-through or every few minutes in a crease. Don't also throw a pint by hand unless you mean to.
Running feeder or a simple link, blockend on a clip, hooklength to a maggot hook. Fill, cap, cast to the clip. On a river, find the crease first with a bomb if you need to.
Commercials: the same spot you'd method-feed, often slightly closer in the cold. Rivers: the crease, not the slacker inside unless that's where they're sitting.
Maggots on the hook, matching the feed. Dead maggots if small fish strip you. A worm tip for perch.
Get a rhythm: fill, cast, wait, repeat. In the cold, wait longer. If the feeder comes back still full, the holes are too small or the maggots are clagged.
Coloured or cold water. A bit of flow on a river. Bright high-pressure commercials may still want it — just a smaller feeder and a longer wait.

Hookbait is maggots, a fluoro in a bronze bunch, or a worm tip for perch. If tiny fish strip you, dead maggots or a bigger bunch.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Fill, cap, cast to a clip. Get a rhythm going. In the cold, wait longer than you think.
10–30 min
If the feeder comes back still full, holes are blocked or maggots are clagged. If it comes back empty with no fish, they are eating feed and ignoring the hookbait.
30–60 min
Change colour or add a worm before you change peg. On a river, make sure you are in the crease, not the dead slack.
F1s knock then pull. River fish often hammer it. Perch rattle.
Let F1s pull. On a river, a proper bite gets a firm lift so you drive the hook in pace.
Standard. Watch perch spines. Barbel: mat, always.
Warm, sweaty maggots. A cage feeder used as a maggot feeder (they dump too fast). Fishing a river before 16 June.
Empty feeder, no fish: they're taking maggots and ignoring the hookbait — change colour or add a worm. Still full: holes blocked. Tiny fish: dead maggots or a bunch.
Beginner setup
30g blockend, bronze maggots, size 16 to two maggots, 40cm hooklength. Cast to a commercial island line and wait.
More advanced
Fluoro maggot on the hook over bronze feed. Mix in a few pinkies in winter. On barbel, a big bunch and a strong hook.
