A window or blockend packed with pellets rather than maggots or groundbait. Commercial carp, F1s and bream on a tight clip.

A pellet feeder puts a payload of micros or 2–4mm pellets around a banded pellet or wafer, without a groundbait cloud. Window feeders and some blockends are built for it. You are still clipping up and building a plate — you are just feeding pellet, which a lot of commercials insist on.
Damp micros so they go out on the deck, not as a dry puff in mid-air.
Pellet-only commercials. Carp and F1s on the deck. When groundbait is banned or putting them off.
A maggot-only winter day. A river crease that wants maggot. Dry pellets that empty in mid-air.

Slow-sinking hookbaits that sit over a method mix. The default commercial carp and F1 change bait when corn and pellet are ignored.

Pumped, soft pellets that sink slowly. An F1 and skimmer hookbait, and a pole bait that matches a pellet feed.
A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
10–12ft feeder, 4000 reel, 5–8lb, a feeder or lead that suits the swim.
On the peg
The feeder is the feed. Recast to refresh. Catapult a few 8mms over the top if they come up.
Window or pellet blockend, shortish hooklength, banded pellet or wafer, clip.
Island, open water, the same spots as a method.
On the deck, hookbait with the payload. Short hair or a band.
Clip, damp the micros, three or four feeders on the plate, then a rhythm.
Most commercial conditions. Cold water: smaller feeder, longer wait.
Damp micros, fill, cast to the clip, wait. Recast even without a bite — you are building a pellet plate. If they swirl, a few 8mms on a catapult or pick up a pellet waggler.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
The feeder is the feed. Recast to refresh. Catapult a few 8mms over the top if they come up.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
A pull round. F1 knocks then weight.
Lift into it.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
Dry pellets. A cage used as a pellet feeder (they dump). No clip.
Empty in mid-air: too dry. Still full: too wet or not enough time. Liners: they are up.
