River feeder

A cage or blockend holding bottom in flow, after 16 June. The honest way to fish a crease for barbel, chub, bream and roach when a stick float will not hold.

Improverfeederriver

What it is

River feeder is not commercial method fishing with a different view. The water moves, so the feeder has to hold, the bait has to belong in that movement, and the close season on rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales — 15 March to 15 June inclusive — is not optional.

You find the crease or the hole, pick a feeder that holds without bouncing into the snags, and build a bed or a trickle depending on the fish. Maggot feeder for a crease full of roach and barbel. Cage of groundbait for bream on a slower stretch. A straight lead when the feeder snags every chuck.

16 June is opening day. This app will not tell you to fish a river in May.

When to use it

Rivers after 16 June. A crease, a hole, a glide you cannot hold with a stick. Barbel, chub, bream, roach. Coloured water after rain is a gift.

When not to

The close season on rivers in England and Wales. Stillwaters (use a cage or method). A weir full of trees where you will lose every feeder. Pace you cannot hold with the leads you own.

The kit

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.

Rod
11–12ft river feeder with a tip that shows a bite in flow, not a broomstick.
Reel
4000–6000, line clip, a clutch that works.
Main line
6–8lb for silvers and chub; 10–12lb on a barbel river with snags.
Hooklength
50–80cm of 0.14–0.20mm. Stronger in the bushes. Longer if you are lining out.
Hook
12–16. Maggot, worm, pellet, meat, bread flake.
Float / feeder
30–60g cage or blockend. Gripper leads only if you must — they snag more.
Accessories
Licence, a diary note of 16 June, a mat for barbel, forceps, spare feeders.

11–12ft feeder, 6–10lb mainline (heavier for barbel), 30–60g cage or blockend that actually holds, 50–80cm hooklength of 0.14–0.20mm, size 12–16.

On the peg

Feeding strategy

The feeder is the feed. Recast to refresh. On maggot, a trickle; on groundbait, a bed then slower. Do not also throw a bucket from the bank unless the swim can take it.

How to set it up

Running feeder, bead, swivel, hooklength. Find the crease with a bomb if you need to, then clip up. Mix so the cage empties on the deck, not at the surface.

Where to cast

The crease, the hole, the slack side of a bend after a spate. Not the dead water under your feet unless that is where they went. Not someone else's run.

Depth / presentation

On the bottom, holding. Hookbait just off the pile. A bunch of maggots, a worm, a banded pellet, a cube of meat. Trip a bomb on the same line if the feeder is too crude.

The first hour

Read the river. Pick a feeder that holds. Put a few in on the clip. Then sit. Five lost feeders in the first hour means the swim is wrong, or the lead is.

Conditions

A steady pace, not a flood. Coloured water after rain. Bright, low, clear water wants a smaller feeder, less splash, and a longer wait — or a stick float instead.

How to fish it

Open season only. Find the crease. Cast, let the feeder settle, tighten so you can see a knock against the flow. Every recast is a feed.

A proper bite pulls the tip over or drops back as a fish moves the feeder. Lift into it and keep them out of the snag you just pulled them from.

If the feeder comes back untouched, you are not on fish or not holding. If it comes back stuffed with weed, move a yard. If tiny fish strip maggots, a bunch, a worm, or a pellet.

Starting routine

First hour plan

  1. 0–10 min

Licence in the bag. Confirm you are outside 15 March–15 June. Read the crease, pick a feeder that holds, clip up.

  2. 10–30 min

Put four or five feeders on that clip. Tighten to the flow. Watch for a pull or a drop-back, not every bounce of weed.

  3. 30–60 min

Untouched: not holding, or not on fish — a yard either way. Snagging: lighter or a bomb. Tiny fish: bigger bait.

Bite indication

A pull over, a drop-back, a rattle then weight. Weed bounce is not a bite. Barbel often move off with it; chub thump.

Striking

A firm lift so you drive the hook in pace. Keep the rod up and walk them away from the bush.

Playing and landing

Barbel: mat, always, and time in the water in a heatwave. Chub: steer them out of the tree. Bream: give them room, slime and all.

Common mistakes

Fishing a river in May. A 20g method frame that bounces into the snags. No mat for barbel. Casting into the tree you then cannot land a fish from.

Troubleshooting

Feeder bouncing: too light. Buried in weed: move. Empty maggot feeder: holes too big or a smashed lid. No fish: wrong line, not wrong maggot. River in May: go home.

Beginner setup

12ft feeder, 40g blockend, bronze maggots, size 16 to two maggots, a gentle crease after 16 June. Recast every few minutes.

More advanced

A bomb on the same clip after the bed is in. Hemp in the maggot feeder for stamp. Meat or a big pellet when maggots are smeared. Change feeder size before you change peg.
