Mugging

Lowering a bait in front of a carp or F1 you can actually see cruising. No feed, or almost none. Eyes, polarised glasses, and a short shallow rig.

What it is

Mugging is stalking with a pole. You watch a fish, ship a short shallow rig out in front of its path, and lower a bait — often a bit of bread, corn or a pellet — so it intercepts it. If you throw feed, you are doing a different method.

It is not a default. It is for days when they are cruising and ignoring a bed. Heatwave welfare still applies: land them, keep them wet, do not play them to exhaustion for a photo.

When to use it

Clear commercials, cruising carp and F1s, bright days, when a bed is being ignored.

When not to

Coloured water you cannot see into. Cold days they are on the deck. A match you should be feeding.

The kit

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.

Rod
The pole, at a length you can hold.
Reel
None. Top kits and a puller if carp live here.
Main line
0.12–0.17mm to the float.
Hooklength
4–12 inches of 0.10–0.15mm.
Hook
16–20, or stronger in the edge.
Float / feeder
A pole float dotted down.
Elastic
Match elastic to the fish, not your optimism.
Accessories
Roost, pots, plummet, winder rigs.

A pole you can hold, elastic to match, a dotted float, a short hooklength.

On the peg

Feeding strategy

Almost none. The hookbait is the feed.

How to set it up

A short shallow kit, strong enough elastic, a visible bait, glasses.

Where to cast

Where they are swimming. Not where you wish they were.

Depth / presentation

In front of the fish, at the depth it is cruising, not behind it and not on its head.

The first hour

Watch before you ship. If you cannot see them, this is not the hour for mugging.

Conditions

Clear, bright, fish you can see. Polarised glasses are the tackle.

How to fish it

Glasses on. Pick a fish. Ship in front of its path, lower the bait, wait. If it turns away, you put it on its head. If it takes, lift, keep it out of the next peg, net it fast in the heat.

Starting routine

First hour plan

  1. 0–10 min

Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.

  2. 10–30 min

Almost none. The hookbait is the feed.

  3. 30–60 min

If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.

Bite indication

You often see the take. The float buries or the elastic moves. Do not wait for a textbook dip.

Striking

A lift as it takes. Too soon and you pull it away; too late and it has spat it.

Playing and landing

Fast in the heat. Wet unhooking. No five-minute air time.

Common mistakes

Throwing feed. Chasing every fish around the lake. Heatwave photos. A deck rig 'mugged' at 11m.

Troubleshooting

They turn away: you put it on them, or the line is too thick. Cannot see them: different method.

Beginner setup

Learn shallow pole first. Then a banded pellet, glasses, one cruising F1, no feed.

More advanced

Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.
