Dobbing

Lowering a bait — often bread — against far-bank cover, into holes in the reeds, or in front of fish tucked against an island. Commercial carp, quietly.

Improverpolecommercial

What it is

Dobbing is presenting a single bait, usually punch or flake of bread, against cover with a pole. You do not feed a bed. You drop it into the hole, wait seconds, lift, try the next hole. It is how you pick off carp that are sat in the reeds on a bright day.

Check the card: some fisheries frown on fishing tight to islands or nesting birds. Leave nesting birds alone.

When to use it

Bright commercials, carp in the reeds or against an island you can reach, bread allowed.

When not to

Nesting birds. A ban on fishing the island. Coloured water with fish in open water on a bed.

The kit

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.

Rod
The pole, at a length you can hold.
Reel
None. Top kits and a puller if carp live here.
Main line
0.12–0.17mm to the float.
Hooklength
4–12 inches of 0.10–0.15mm.
Hook
16–20, or stronger in the edge.
Float / feeder
A pole float dotted down.
Elastic
Match elastic to the fish, not your optimism.
Accessories
Roost, pots, plummet, winder rigs.

A pole you can hold, elastic to match, a dotted float, a short hooklength.

On the peg

Feeding strategy

None, or a single free offering. The hookbait is the point.

How to set it up

A shallow or cover rig, bread, elastic that can stop them hitting the bushes.

Where to cast

Holes in the reeds, the island margin you can reach, far-bank cover. Not through a bird's nest.

Depth / presentation

Lowered in, still, against the cover. Seconds, not minutes.

The first hour

Look for dark shapes. Dob the holes you can reach. If nothing is in cover, fish open water.

Conditions

Clear, bright, fish you can see in cover. Wind you can still hold a pole in.

How to fish it

Ship to the hole, lower the bread, wait a few seconds. A sail-away or a shadow that takes it. Lift, keep them out of the bush, net them. Then the next hole. Do not sit in one hole for forty minutes.

Starting routine

First hour plan

  1. 0–10 min

Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.

  2. 10–30 min

None, or a single free offering. The hookbait is the point.

  3. 30–60 min

If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.

Bite indication

Often instant. A bury, a sail, a shadow. If nothing in ten seconds, try the next hole.

Striking

A lift as it goes. Strong elastic, short fight away from cover.

Playing and landing

Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.

Common mistakes

Sitting on one hole all day. Fishing a nest. 4 elastic into a bush. A loaf of feed.

Troubleshooting

Nothing in cover: they are not there. Coming off: bread too soft, or a hook too small. Nesting birds: move.

Beginner setup

Top 4–6 of a pole, 12 elastic, a bit of punch or flake, the island you can actually reach.

More advanced

Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.
