Shallow pole

A pole rig fished up in the water, often with a slap, for carp and F1s that have come off the deck. The commercial summer companion to the pellet waggler.

What it is

When fish swirl and crash on a commercial, you can catch them on a pellet waggler — or you can catch them on a pole, shallower than you plumbed, with a short line and a regular feed. Shallow pole is that job.

You are making a column of falling pellets or maggots and putting a hookbait in it, at a depth you can actually hold. Slap the rig on the surface if they want the noise; leave it if they do not. Depth is the whole game, just as it is on a pellet waggler. Start two to three feet, then go shallower if they are swirling, deeper if you are foul-hooking.

When to use it

Warm commercials. F1s and carp off the deck. A peg you can reach with the pole. When the pellet waggler is catching the next peg and you have carbon in the bag.

When not to

Cold water. A gale you cannot hold 13m in. Fish clearly on the bottom. Canals in winter — that is punch and the deck.

The kit

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.

Rod
The pole. Drop a section if the wind owns 16m.
Reel
None. Puller kit for bonus carp.
Main line
0.14–0.17mm to the float.
Hooklength
6–12 inches of 0.12–0.15mm. Short, so you hit them.
Hook
16–18, bait band to 6mm pellet, or maggot.
Float / feeder
A short, stable shallow float. Not a 4x18 deck float jammed up the line.
Elastic
8–12. Light enough to hit F1s, strong enough for a bonus carp.
Accessories
Pot or a catapult, fishery pellets, spare top kit set shallower.

11–16m pole you can actually hold, 8–12 elastic, a short-bodied shallow float, 0.14–0.17mm, 6–12 inch hooklength, size 16–18 to a banded pellet or maggot.

On the peg

Feeding strategy

Little and often, by pot or by throwing. You are building a column, not a bed. If you dump a pot and wait, they will not stay up.

How to set it up

A dedicated shallow kit, marked. Start 2–3ft. Band a pellet. Feed, then ship the rig into the feed — do not lower a deck rig and hope.

Where to cast

Open water you can reach. The near side of an island if 11–13m gets you there. Not the far-bank bushes you cannot hold a fish out of.

Depth / presentation

Up in the water. Start 2–3ft. Shallower if swirling and missing; deeper if foul-hooking. Optional slap to call them.

The first hour

If they are already showing, feed and go straight shallow. If not, start on the deck and come up when they do. Do not fish shallow all morning on a cold lake.

Conditions

Cloud and a ripple help. Bright calm days still work if you feed enough to compete. A cold north-easterly usually kills it — go back on the deck.

How to fish it

Feed a dozen pellets, ship the shallow rig into that column, and watch. A dip, a hold, a sail — lift the pole, do not carp-strike.

If they want noise, slap the rig on the surface and let it settle. If they spook at the slap, stop. Count the bait down. A take on 'two' tells you the depth.

Keep feeding. A quiet shallow line is just a bad deck line. If you foul-hook, go a bit deeper or feed a wider area. If nothing, they are not up.

Starting routine

First hour plan

  1. 0–10 min

Look. If they are swirling, feed and start 2–3ft. If the lake is dead, start on the deck instead.

  2. 10–30 min

A pot or a throw every minute. Count the bait down. Slap only if they respond to it.

  3. 30–60 min

Foul-hooking: deeper, or feed less tight. Nothing: they are not up — deck, method, or a waggler. Missing: shallower or a smaller bait.

Bite indication

A dip, a hold, elastic coming out. Do not wait for the float to bury on every F1.

Striking

A lift of the pole. The elastic does the shock. A heave launches the rig into the next peg.

Playing and landing

Ship back steadily. Keep them high if you can — they will dive for the next peg's feeder line. Net at the top kit.

Common mistakes

A deck float fished shallow. Not feeding. Starting at 6 inches and foul-hooking everything. 16m in a wind you cannot hold.

Troubleshooting

Foul-hooking: too shallow or too many fish in a thimble of water. Nothing: they are not up. Tiny fish: bigger pellet, a small bulk, or go back on the deck.

Beginner setup

11m, 8 elastic, a short shallow float, 6mm banded pellet, 2–3ft. Feed fishery pellets every thirty seconds on a warm F1 lake.

More advanced

Two kits, two depths. Slap on one line, leave the other. Swap 4mm and 6mm. Come inside if they follow the pole back.
