Slapping a shallow pole rig on the surface to make a noise that draws carp and F1s up. Then you actually fish the shallow line you just advertised.

The slap is a call, not a method on its own. You slap the rig (or a dedicated slapper) on the water, feed, and catch them shallow when they come to the noise. If they do not want the noise, stop slapping — you are just educating them.
Learn shallow pole first. Then add the slap on days they respond to it.

The language of UK commercials. Micros for the method, fishery pellets for the catapult. If the lake sells them, use them.

Banded 6 and 8mm feed pellets used as hookbaits. The pellet waggler bait, and a method hookbait that stays on.

Maggots
The universal bait. If you could only have one thing in the bag for a mixed UK stillwater or canal, maggots would still be the answer.
A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.
A pole you can hold, elastic to match, a dotted float, a short hooklength.
On the peg
Pellets or maggots with the slap, little and often. The noise plus the feed is the draw.
A shallow kit that will take a slap without destroying the float. Banded pellet or maggot.
Open water you can reach. Not against a snag you then cannot land them from.
Shallow, after the slap. Count it down.
If they are already up, slap and see. If the lake is dead, start on the deck.
Warm, a bit of ripple or flat enough to slap. They must be willing to come up.
Slap, feed, lower or leave the rig. A take on the drop or as it sits. If they swirl and ignore it, shallower or a smaller bait. If they leave, stop slapping and fish quieter.
Starting routine
0–10 min
Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.
10–30 min
Pellets or maggots with the slap, little and often. The noise plus the feed is the draw.
30–60 min
If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.
On the drop, a bury, elastic out. Same as shallow pole, often faster.
A lift of the pole. Do not heave a slap into the next peg.
Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.
Slapping all day on a dead lake. A deck float used as a slapper. Never actually fishing the shallow rig.
They leave: too much noise. Foul-hooking: too shallow. Nothing: they are not up.
Beginner setup
Shallow pole first. Then a slap on a warm F1 lake, 6mm pellet, 2–3ft.
More advanced
Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.
