Rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales are closed to coarse fishing from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. 16 June is opening day. Most stillwaters stay open — check club and SSSI rules.
Seasonal behaviour
They feed all open season. Autumn and winter big-chub fishing is a British tradition. Summer likes early, late, and shade.
Where to look for the fish
Cover. Far-bank bushes, rafts, the tail of a pool, canal boat moorings, and any crease that brings food past a snag.

Waggler setup
Locked float, bulk around the base, droppers down the line, fine hooklength. The same skeleton covers traditional waggler and, with a dumpy body, pellet waggler.

Bomb / running leger
A straight lead on a run ring or inline, a hooklength, and a bait. The quiet alternative to a feeder.

Stick float rig
Shirt-button shotting down a stick float so you can hold, ease, and mend a bait down a river crease.
Feeding approach
A few free offerings into the hole, then the hookbait. Hemp can hold them. Don't send a pint of maggot under a bush and expect them to stay.
Where in the swim
They watch. They come out, take, and bolt for the snag. A slow, confident melt of the float is classic. Don't wave the landing net early.
Common mistakes
Standing on the skyline. Casting onto their heads. Fishing open water because it looks 'nice'. Too much feed before the first fish.
What to change if it isn’t working
Spooked: rest the swim, or move. Tiny taps: they're there — smaller hook, wait. No interest: change bait before you change peg.
Tackle for the top method
Traditional waggler
3g insert waggler, bulk around the float, two droppers, size 18 to maggot, fished at dead depth. Feed a dozen maggots every couple of minutes. That will catch roach on most canals and silver lakes.
