Everyday UK coarse baits
Editorial — the baits most UK coarse anglers actually carry. Not app analytics.
Maggots
The universal bait. If you could only have one thing in the bag for a mixed UK stillwater or canal, maggots would still be the answer.
Casters
Maggots that have pupated. A better stamp of silver fish, and a change bait when maggots are getting mobbed.
Worms
Dendrobaenas, lobs and redworms. Perch, bream, tench and a bonus eel. The bait that still works when fashion has moved on.
Corn
Cheap, bright, and eaten by almost everything that swims in stillwater. One of the best 'I've only got this' baits in British coarse fishing.
Hemp
Cooked hempseed. A holding bait for roach, a bed for barbel, and the reason tares still exist.
Pellets
The language of UK commercials. Micros for the method, fishery pellets for the catapult. If the lake sells them, use them.
Expander pellets
Pumped, soft pellets that sink slowly. An F1 and skimmer hookbait, and a pole bait that matches a pellet feed.
Hard pellets
Banded 6 and 8mm feed pellets used as hookbaits. The pellet waggler bait, and a method hookbait that stays on.
Wafters
Slow-sinking hookbaits that sit over a method mix. The default commercial carp and F1 change bait when corn and pellet are ignored.
Paste
Soft, moulded hookbait for the pole and the edge. Carp and F1s in the margins, and a bait that hides the hook.
Groundbait
A feed, not a hookbait. The cloud and the carpet that makes cage feeders, some method mixes, and bream lines work.
Bread
Punch, flake, crust. Canal winter roach, river chub, and a surface bait for carp. The cheapest serious bait in the bag.
Luncheon meat
Tinned meat cubes. Margin carp, barbel, and a bait a lot of commercials ban in summer — check the card.
Live / natural

- PinkiesSmall maggots, usually pink. Winter F1s, canal silvers, and the hookbait when bronze maggots look too big.
- SquattsThe tiniest maggot. Canal punch companion and a feed for small silvers when even pinkies look crude.
- CastersMaggots that have pupated. A better stamp of silver fish, and a change bait when maggots are getting mobbed.
- WormsDendrobaenas, lobs and redworms. Perch, bream, tench and a bonus eel. The bait that still works when fashion has moved on.
- Chopped wormWorms cut to pieces as feed. A puller of perch, bream and tench — not a hookbait on its own.
Particles / seeds

- CheesePaste or a cube under a bush. A chub bait, and occasionally a carp or barbel surprise — not a commercial default.
Predator baits
Deadbaits and lures only with the right kit and the law. Do not move live fish between waters. Rivers: 15 March–15 June closed.
