A small dark pea fished over hemp. The summer river-roach bait people forget they know.
Tares are a traditional hookbait for roach that have settled on hemp. They are a bit bigger, dark, and selective. You don't need a gallon. A small bag, cooked until they plump, is a summer tactic on rivers and some stillwaters.
They are not a carp bait, and they are not for a first-ever session. They are for the day maggots are catching 2oz fish and the better roach are on the hemp.

Summer rivers after 16 June. Occasional stillwater roach. When hemp is holding them.
High summer. That's the point.
Single on a small hook, over hemp feed, stick float or waggler.
Soak and simmer until they swell and soften. Don't cook them to mush.
Feeding
A small bag.
A tare every so often in the hemp feed, not a carpet of tares.
Hemp. That's the pairing.
Tare on the hook, hemp in the swim. Maggot if they won't have the tare yet.
Hemp is the feed. Tares are mostly the hookbait, with the odd one loose-fed.
Fishing tares without hemp. Using them in January. A huge hook.
If they ignore the tare, keep feeding hemp and go back to maggot until they settle.
Beginner tip
You can skip tares until hemp is already working. Then one tare on a 18 is the step up.
Advanced tip
The moment they start bubbling on hemp, switch. Ten minutes too early and you'll think tares don't work.
