Roach
The silver that made canal and river fishing. A proper roach — brick-red fins, clean scales, that violet eye — is still one of the most satisfying fish you can catch.

Rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales are closed to coarse fishing from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. 16 June is opening day. Most stillwaters stay open — check club and SSSI rules.
Seasonal behaviour
Autumn and winter are the big-roach months on many venues. Summer roach are catchable but small fish often dominate. Hemp and tares in high summer can sort a better stamp. Rivers come alive after the 16 June start.
Where to look for the fish
Canal far-shelf and lock cuttings. River crease, streamer weed and slacks. Stillwater drop-offs and the quieter end of a commercial silver lake. They like cover and a bit of depth.

A towpath, a far shelf, boats, and some of the most thoughtful fishing in the country. Bread punch, pole, and waggler still rule.

Rig
Waggler setup
Locked float, bulk around the base, droppers down the line, fine hooklength. The same skeleton covers traditional waggler and, with a dumpy body, pellet waggler.

Shirt-button shotting down a stick float so you can hold, ease, and mend a bait down a river crease.

A dotted pole float, bulk and droppers, a short hooklength, elastic in the top kit. Accuracy is the whole point.
Feeding approach
Little and often. A dozen maggots, a pinch of hemp, or a piece of punch. If small fish smear you, feed hemp and fish corn, caster or tares over it.
Where in the swim
A feeding shoal lifts and drops as one. If you're catching tiny fish, the bigger ones may be a yard further out or a foot deeper. Roach bites are often a dink, a hold-under, or a slow slide — strike too hard and you'll miss or bump.
Common mistakes
Feeding too much, too fast. Fishing too heavy a float for shy canal fish. Striking at every tremble. Ignoring bread punch because maggots are 'easier'.
What to change if it isn’t working
Only tiny fish: change hookbait (corn, punch, hemp) and ease the feed. No bites: you're off the line or too heavy. Lifts: that's often a better fish — strike.
