Slider float

A float that slides to a stop-knot so you can fish deeper water than the rod is long. Reservoirs, pits, and a stillwater that has dropped away.

Experiencedfloatspecimen

What it is

A slider lets the float run up the line to a bead against a stop-knot, so you can fish 12–20ft on a 13ft rod. Casting is a fanned loop, not a punch. Plumbing is a job, not a guess.

It is a specialist stillwater tool. It is not a pellet waggler, and it is not how you fish a 4ft commercial.

When to use it

Deep stillwaters, reservoirs, pits. Bream and silvers at range and depth. When a feeder would work but you want a float.

When not to

Shallow commercials. A canal. Anytime you have not learned to cast a slider without tangling the world.

The kit

A starting point, not a shopping list you have to finish. Match the water in front of you.

Rod
12–13ft float rod.
Reel
3000, light and smooth.
Main line
3–5lb.
Hooklength
12–18 inches of 0.10–0.14mm.
Hook
16–20 to maggot or punch; 14–16 to corn.
Float / feeder
A waggler or river float to match the job.
Accessories
Plummet, shot, float stops or rubbers, a bait pouch.

12–13ft float rod, 3000 reel, 3–5lb line, a float you can actually see, fine hooklength.

On the peg

Feeding strategy

Catapult or a small cage to the same clip. Little and often once you are on them.

How to set it up

Stop-knot, bead, slider, bulk well down, a long tail. Practise the cast on grass first if you must.

Where to cast

The deep, the base of a drop-off, a known bream hole.

Depth / presentation

Dead depth or a bit over, at range. The bait should settle, not helicopter.

The first hour

Tie a stop you can actually move. Find the depth. Then feed and fish, not the other way round.

Conditions

A manageable wind. Big waves make a slider a feeder day.

How to fish it

Set the stop deep, cast in a loop, let the float run, tighten. If it does not sit, you are too shallow or the bulk is wrong. Feed the same spot. A slide-under is the bite.

Starting routine

First hour plan

  1. 0–10 min

Get a bait in the water on the line you intend to fish. Do not search the whole venue in ten minutes.

  2. 10–30 min

Catapult or a small cage to the same clip. Little and often once you are on them.

  3. 30–60 min

If nothing, change one thing — depth, bait or spot — not three. Read the troubleshooting on this page.

Bite indication

A slide, a hold, a sail. Give it a moment on a dither, then a firm lift.

Striking

A long, clean lift to pick up the slack a slider always has.

Playing and landing

Net anything with size or spines. Wet hands, unhook, return. A photograph is optional; the fish in the water is not.

Common mistakes

A slider on a 4ft lake. A punchy carp-rod cast. No idea of depth.

Troubleshooting

Tangles: you punched it. Float not sitting: stop too shallow, or not locked. Cannot hit them: wait longer, or a feeder.

Beginner setup

Learn the traditional waggler first. Then a loaded slider, a stop-knot you can move, maggot at a known depth.

More advanced

Change depth, bait or feed before you change peg.
