The small, quick silver of clean rivers. Stick float, maggot, and a strike that has to be faster than the fish.
Dace shoal in clear, well-oxygenated rivers and some streams. They are not roach and they are not bleak: a concave anal fin, a quieter colour, and a bite that is gone if you admire it.
A light stick float or a whip, maggot or hemp, and a line down a crease will catch them. They are a 16 June fish in England and Wales. Small, but a net of dace is proper river fishing.
Gravel runs, streamer weed, the faster crease, and the tail of a pool. They like a bit of pace.
Open season. Autumn often gives a better stamp. Bright high summer can drive them to the shade of the far bank.
Fast bites. A dip and gone. Feed little and keep the bait running naturally. They will rise to a slowing bait.
Wet hands, small mesh, back they go. Don't pile them in a keepnet if you don't need to.
A few maggots every run-through. Hemp for stamp. Little and often is the whole method.
A float that's too heavy. Striking too slow. Feeding like you're packing a bream swim.
Missing them: smaller hook, less shot down the line, strike on the dip. No fish: you're not on the crease.
