Seasonal behaviour

They feed all year on commercials. Winter F1s want maggot, pinkie and small expanders. Summer F1s want pellet, shallow, and noise. Autumn is a gift — they pile on weight and feed with confidence.

Where to look for the fish

Commercials: open water, far-bank, islands, and the first 11 metres on the pole. They use the whole water column. Margins come alive late, especially in the warm.

  Waggler setup

  Locked float, bulk around the base, droppers down the line, fine hooklength. The same skeleton covers traditional waggler and, with a dumpy body, pellet waggler.

  A dotted pole float, bulk and droppers, a short hooklength, elastic in the top kit. Accuracy is the whole point.

  A straight lead on a run ring or inline, a hooklength, and a bait. The quiet alternative to a feeder.

Feeding approach

Little, often, and noisy in the warm. In the cold, a dozen maggots or micros and a wait. Don't pile in a bag of groundbait before you've had a fish.

Where in the swim

Curious and competitive when feeding, then suddenly gone. Liners without bites means they're above you. Tiny taps on a method mean the hookbait is wrong or the mix is too sticky. When they swirl under the pellet waggler, you're close — shorten up, feed more often, and don't strike at every dip.

Common mistakes

Fishing too heavy a method for finicky fish. Big wafters when they want an expander. Waiting for a sail-away bite. Ignoring the pellet waggler because 'the method always works here'.

What to change if it isn’t working

Knocks, no fish: smaller bait, shorter hooklength, or come up. Nothing showing: maggot or expander on the deck. Swirls: pellet waggler, shallower, feed every cast.
