Rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales are closed to coarse fishing from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. 16 June is opening day. Most stillwaters stay open — check club and SSSI rules.
Welfare & the law
Watch the dorsal and the gill covers. Wet hands, unhook in the net if you can. They swallow a worm; carry forceps. Don't keep a big perch in a keepnet in warm water.
Seasonal behaviour
Autumn and early spring are the big-perch months. They feed in winter if you put a worm in front of them. High summer they still live in the shade of features.
Where to look for the fish
Snags, lock mouths, bridges, features, and the edge of a shoal of silver fish. They hunt by sight in coloured water better than people think.

Rig
Waggler setup
Locked float, bulk around the base, droppers down the line, fine hooklength. The same skeleton covers traditional waggler and, with a dumpy body, pellet waggler.

Bomb / running leger
A straight lead on a run ring or inline, a hooklength, and a bait. The quiet alternative to a feeder.

Pole rig
A dotted pole float, bulk and droppers, a short hooklength, elastic in the top kit. Accuracy is the whole point.
Feeding approach
A little chopped worm or maggot to pull in fry, then a bigger worm or a small fish-shaped lure. Don't feed a carpet — perch are hunters, not grazers.
Where in the swim
They ambush. A rattle of small fish, then a take. They will follow a bait before grabbing it. Don't strike at the first tap on a worm — let them have it.
Common mistakes
Striking too soon on a worm. Fishing open desert with no feature. A trace meant for pike when a light hooklength would do. Ignoring the lock mouth because it looks too obvious.
What to change if it isn’t working
Taps, no fish: wait longer, smaller hook, or a worm head only. Nothing: move to cover. Small perch: a bigger bait just off the shoal.
Tackle for the top method
Traditional waggler
3g insert waggler, bulk around the float, two droppers, size 18 to maggot, fished at dead depth. Feed a dozen maggots every couple of minutes. That will catch roach on most canals and silver lakes.
